AromaGems are unique, effective and long lasting home air fresheners. To create the product, Planet Naturals imports chunky sea salt from the Antilles Islands and blends it with special coloring and natural fragrance oils. Around 20 scents are available. “Our top seller is Earth, which is natural brown, black and green tones,” states Joel Patterson, owner. “Cool Water is very popular as well as Lavender and Strawberry Vanilla.” AromaGems will last for four to six months with the consumer merely stirring them occasionally to release the fragrance. In addition, the product comes with a small bottle of fragrance oil that will extend the product’s life for another three to four months. “People tell us the product lasts a full year,” Patterson reports. “Another important point is that people who have not been able to use fragrances in their homes can use AromaGems. That is because we do not use formaldehyde or alcohol, and they are not being burned like candles so there is no soot being released. Those factors can bother people and affect their allergies.”
Fragrance attracts shoppers
Plant Naturals previously sold AromaGems only through retail channels and recently began wholesaling to flea market vendors as well. “Our vendors often spend more time promoting our products than a retail shop does, and they are making very good sales and profits as a result,” Patterson continues. “The products have several appealing factors. They are very colorful and pretty, and have a high-end appeal. The fragrances drift throughout the market and people are drawn to the aroma. Vendors can display AromaGems in a nice bowl. They often put four or five pounds on display and have a couple of individual bags ready to sell. As they day goes on, they bag the rocks from the bowl.”
Another noteworthy aspect is that, in any market with less than 500 vendors, the company will only allow one vendor to carry the product. “We try not to create competition,” Patterson adds. “The only exception is if one vendor feels there is room in that market for sales of the product by another vendor and refers someone to us. In that case, the first vendor would receive a commission for the referral.”
Buying details
Flea market vendors generally buy AromaGems in ten, 20 and 40 pound containers. The ten pound bucket comes with ten bags and ten bottles of oil for ten sellable units. “They are selling very well, and many retailers order a ten pound bag each week. We suggest they buy the larger bags to have the product on hand, save money and earn bigger profits. The price gets better the more they buy,” Patterson explains. Wholesale is around $5.25 per unit and the product retails for around $20, so there is a four time markup when purchasing the larger quantities.
The minimum order for five to six fragrances ranges from $250 to $350, depending on the desired marketing materials. Planet Naturals has everything vendors need to get started including banners, signage and labels, which it sells at cost.
