The Gibson County Fairgrounds in Trenton, TN used to be home to First Monday, the oldest flea market in the state. First Monday originated back in the 1900’s, and was a community staple for many generations. “When First Monday closed down about 8-10 years ago it really left a void,” says Phil Colwell, owner of the new Gibson County Flea and Farmer’s Market. Colwell and his family have been in the flea market business for over 25 years as vendors. After seeing First Monday close down, Colwell decided to take matters into his own hands and open the Gibson County Flea and Farmer’s Market on the same historical fairgrounds. Colwell’s new market just celebrated a successful first year this January. Gibson County Flea regularly attracts 100 – 150 vendors every month from over nine different states, including many merchants who used to attend First Monday.
“The vendors are different each month,” explains Colwell, so visitors can expect new products and different booths with each visit. The market’s offerings include antiques, collectibles, purses, clothing, and even animals such as chickens, ducks, and goats. “We really have an assortment of everything,” says Colwell. There is a large variety of food available all day, and the fair has a mixture of outdoor and indoor booths. The market is open year-round on the second weekend of every month. Their hours are Friday 2pm – 7pm, Saturday 8am – 5pm, and Sunday 8am – 4pm. Gibson County Flea and Farmer’s Market has been such a success, Colwell expects to open a second location at the fairgrounds in Lexington, TN starting in May. The new location will run the third weekend of every month, so visitors and vendors have the opportunity to attend both shows.
