The Wellfleet Flea Market, celebrating 40 years in business this year, is Cape Cod’s biggest market. The venue accommodates up to 200 vendors selling new items, area memorabilia, antiques, collectibles, jewelry, T-shirts and clothing, household goods and much more. While Wellfleet Flea is open year round, during peak season the market has amenities including a snack bar, playground, beer garden and restrooms. It is held in the drive-in theater area from the weekend before Memorial Day to Columbus Day weekend, Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, it is open Wednesdays and Thursdays the last week in June through the end of August, as well as Memorial Day Monday and Labor Day Monday. “We have a great collectibles section, particularly on Sundays, and the market does very well,” says co-owner John Vincent. From the weekend beyond Columbus Day through mid May, a smaller market is held in the cinema parking lot on Saturdays and Sundays only, and restrooms are available. All markets are “weather permitting,” and times are approximate.
“We are in the tourist area of Cape Cod adjacent to the Cape Cod National Seashore,” Vincent continues. “We are on the only main route that goes through Wellfleet. We have great visibility and traffic because people have to drive by our facility to get to the outer part of the Cape. Cape Cod is a hugely popular vacation destination for day trippers and many people rent a home for the week. People that come to this end of the Cape tend to have money to spend.”
In peak season, shoppers pay a small entry fee and there is no admission charge in the off season. Booth rates are $25 per space per day Memorial Day to Labor Day, and weekdays are $20 per space per day. In the off season, fees are as low as $3 a space, depending on the weather. “In January we are have a handful of sellers, and it grows as the year progresses,” Vincent adds. “It is up to the vendors. We are here if they want to come out and set up.”
