The DC Flea Market in Dodge City, KS, opened this weekend with fanfare including a live radio remote, an inflatable jumper for kids, music and food. The market is located on South Second Avenue on the former site of Dillon’s store.
Business owner Cosme Tejeda purchased the building almost five years ago, soon after the Dillon’s store closed. For two years, Tejeda rented the building to Furniture Outlet as a storage facility. When the building once again became vacant, Tejeda came up with the idea of opening a flea market. Tejeda told the Dodge City Daily Globe that flea markets are popular in his native country Mexico. He said he remembered visiting outdoor flea markets where he could find everything from household items and clothing to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Furniture, Clothing and Cosmetics Vendors Expected
According to Tejeda, 40 vendors initially expressed interest in renting space at the DC Flea Market. Among those vendors scheduled to sell their merchandise this past weekend were Paleteria Rio Grande (offering ice cream, fresh fruit cocktails, nachos, corn on a stick and more), Saaubedra Used Furniture, La Lupita (accessories) and Charlotte Fashion (clothing). Other vendors were expected to sell children’s clothing, perfume, Herbalife products, household items and more.
