The Dixieland Flea Market, in Waterford, MI, has been operating Fridays through Sundays, for nearly 38 years. During the early years, the market boasted a large array of antiques and specialty items, and today, Dixieland has close to 250 vendors, inside and outside. From tools to rare coins, the flea market has many items to choose from, including vintage clothing, jewelry, furniture, books, antiques and deer mounts.
For $50 a weekend, vendors can set up outside or pay as they go for $20 a day. The market is open Fridays, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission and parking are free.
Flea market manager, Jim Gardner, took the job a year ago and raised the standards for vendors, added security and brought a new attitude to the place. Since Gardner, a retired Franklin Village police officer, took the reigns, theft calls from the Waterford Police Department have fallen by 80 percent, according to the Oakland Press. If a seller deals in stolen goods, in addition to law enforcement’s involvement, Gardner has the vendor’s lease permanently revoked.
“On top of the good deals from our vendors, shoppers need to know that they are being looked after by us,” Gardner told the Oakland Press. “It adds to the shopping experience and keeps them coming back and, therefore, keeps us in business.”
