Port Canaveral, a deep water port and free trade zone in Florida through which 1.3 million cruise passengers pass annually, is planning a new outdoor market to cater to that tourism traffic, according to a report on FloridaToday.com. The Cove Marketplace is now advertising on Craigslist, for example, to attract vendors for a January 2011 launch. In order to make a good fit to the expected customer base, market organizers are especially seeking vendors who are local artisans and retailers selling Florida-themed products that will appeal to tourists as well as local people.
Cove Marketplace manager Joe Thompson confirmed the news about the market, but could not say anything more. Repeated calls to Port Canaveral director of communications Rosalind Harvey were not returned.
The market will take place in an open lot across the street from two restaurants. Rent will be $325 for a 10 ft. by 10 ft. space on a monthly basis. With a three month commitment, that drops down to $300 per month. The market will be open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; vendors must be present during all hours of operation, and a white tent is required. There will be room for 100 vendors, and FloridaToday, com reports that at least 50 have expressed an interest so far.
