Few environments are as conducive to live demonstrations as flea markets, and the HairScape is one product that makes for an engaging demo. At ASDLV last week, HairScape inventor, Greg Paul, president of GDP Global, had a bustling booth as he showed buyers how the HairScape is used to clean and prevent hairy messes. “I needed something that would fix the issue of having stray hair all over the bathroom every time I trimmed, or cut my dog’s hair,” Paul says. The demo process was straightforward, quick and effective, as Paul catches onlookers’ eyes.
Eye Appeal and Pet Approval
“Would you like to see what this does?” he asks, as people stop to watch how the cushiony blue mat can be used. Pulling a small wastebasket of faux fur trimmings into play, Paul lays the mat on the ground and scatters faux fur all over it. While most mats, especially those made of carpet, would be magnets for fuzz and hair, HairScape is different. Paul grabs the sides of the HairScape, curls it into a funnel, and deposits the unwanted trimmings back into the wastebasket, leaving nothing but a clean surface behind. He then holds the mat up to his audience so that they can see how clean it is, in spite of hair’s clingy nature. To seal the deal, he places the mat back on the ground and invites customers to stand on it and feel how supple the cushion is underfoot. The HairScape has a twin product, the PetScape, of the same design with pets in mind. “I use the PetScape with my dog, Teddy,” Paul points out. “Hair sticks to everything, but not to this. Not only that, but water beads right off of it, and it’s easily washable.” Even after weeks of demonstrating the same mat, it remains clean.
Many vendors find that their personalities are as much of a selling tool as their merchandise. Being dynamic, approachable and able to tell an amusing story captivates an audience as much as having the hottest sellers at the flea market. When a product like HairScape and PetScape creates an opportunity to interact with customers, that product also creates the opportunity to make a sale. Priced to retail for $34.99 and available in lots of 25 for $300, but with no minimum order, Paul’s mats take the hassle out of grooming and serve as a conversation piece in vendors’ booths.
