COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the health and wellness industry for the better. While sales for hand sanitizer and cleaning products skyrocketed, vitamin, minerals, and supplements’ (VMS) sales also increased nearly 20 percent since the pandemic started, according to the Chain Drug Review. Even with COVID vaccines rolling out, a commitment to sticking to self-care regimens and disease prevention is still expected to be prevalent.
An Increase in Market Foot Traffic
Business owners have a great opportunity to connect with their customers over health and wellness products, especially now that flea market and swap meet traffic is at an all-time high since the pandemic first started. Charles Cook, market manager of Collinsville Trade Day, says the traffic at his market has been great. “We are an outdoor market so people feel safer shopping here. We have been booked solid with vendors ever since we reopened last year and the traffic has been terrific. Being an outdoor market has really helped us,” Cook said.
Jill Van Kleeck, market manager of Millers Flea Market, says she is also seeing consumers coming back to her market. “We first reopened on April 25 of last year, and we had a very slow start, which I expected, but the traffic came back nicely. It picked up a lot around Christmas time, but now we have gotten very busy within the last 7-10 weeks. Since we are not an enclosed environment, I think shoppers feel safer coming to an open air market,” Van Kleeck said.
Attracting Customers to Your Booth
Now is the time to get in front of as many consumers as you can and sell your merchandise. In order to stand out from the competition, it will be crucial for vendors to identify the functional attributes that your health and wellness products can offer. Specifically, attributes that have to do with holistic health and well-being such as stress, sleep, and immunity — all factors that shoppers have been drawn to since the beginning of COVID-19. Utilize package messaging or signage around your booth to promote special nutrients and ingredients tied to well-being.
IRIWorldwide conducted a consumer survey on VMS and self-care, which found that an increased focus on health and immunity is expected to continue long after the pandemic. Twenty-seven percent of respondents noted that they will focus more on health in the future as a result of this pandemic, and 17 percent said they will buy more products that support immunity as a result of the pandemic. Consumers will continue to look for products that address sleep, anxiety, and immunity as we go further into 2021. For example, Melatonin delivered substantial growth in 2020, up 45 percent, and CBD is another item that shoppers are turning to to ease their anxiety.
CBD Usage Continues to Grow
According to an annual CBD Consumer Research Study conducted in 2021 by The CBD Insider, unlike last year’s data, the majority of current CBD consumers indicated that they have been using their products for more than a year. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 proved to be a highly influential variable when it came to the manner in which respondents learned about and accessed CBD. “CBD is rapidly growing in popularity,” CBD Insider Editor-In-Chief, Ian Eckstein, said. “Our primary objectives with this year’s report are to help the CBD industry mature as it grows and provide meaningful and sorely needed insights about current and potential CBD consumers.”
What Consumers are Buying
The study found that CBD oils, drops, and tinctures were the most frequently used product type across all consumer groups, as well as the type that non-users would feel more comfortable trying. However, gummies have been steadily catching up to CBD oil, trailing by a smaller margin amongst current consumers who had tried both product types (53% gummies versus 55% CBD oil) than past consumers (39% gummies to 49% oil). Considering the high level of uncertainty surrounding CBD dose accuracy, it is not so surprising that gummies containing pre-measured amounts of the compound have continued to grow in popularity. Although CBD vape has not had as surprising of an increase in demand, the sector has spiked along with the industry as a whole.
