Silicon Valley Textiles, Inc. is a family run business that has been operating for more than 22 years. The company is dedicated to indie retailers, and wholesales an extensive line of licensed, original and generic plush blankets in queen, twin and throw sizes. Many of the firm’s blankets are made of the heavier raschel and micro-raschel mink materials.
“We are the exclusive U.S. distributor for LMFAO, Dr. Who, Adventure Time, Playboy, Justin Bieber and Star Trek blankets, to name a few,” explains Sunny Singh, VP. “We were among the first companies to sell and distribute NFL blankets with low minimum orders. Now we have acquired a few licenses of our own.” These include the U.S. Armed Forces, the National Rifle Association, the Sons of Anarchy television show and the movies of Marilyn Monroe through Fox Studios. “Our Marilyn Monroe line of blankets, throws and beach towels is going to be enormously popular,” Singh predicts. “We have received several requests for these products.”
Nu Trendz, Huntsman & Seven Stars Collections
Silicon Valley Textiles also recently expanded its signature licensed collections. Of these designs from popular artists, the Huntsman, a camouflage look similar to the real tree line, Seven Stars wildlife and Nu Trendz are very well liked, according to Singh. The collections are available in queen size blankets, and some also have matching throws and beach towels. The company is also continuing to expand its line of lower priced generic blankets. All together, the firm offers more than 300 designs. Vendors may visit the company’s website to see its extensive array of products and patterns.
When the weather gets colder, all blankets sell, Singh assures. “The licensed items do especially well between Thanksgiving and Christmas. People are looking for good quality products in popular themes. They want to personalize their gifts to what appeals to their friends and family.”
The company also carries a line of cold weather apparel, in the form of basic, economical jackets and outdoor gear often connected to its licensed goods. In the Huntsman collection, for example, hoodies and tee shirts are available. In addition, the firm sells rugs.
Silicon Valley Textiles’ business grew out of flea markets, having begun as a retail vendor selling at swap meets in 1991. “We understand the customer base. We know what people have to do to sell and what price points work best,” Singh notes. As is true with many flea market products, displays sell, he says. “Choose a local team or popular character, and hang the blanket in the front of your booth. Putting the products front and center will grab shoppers’ attention and help sell the products.” That connection helps the company develop its products, too. “Our customers tell us what themes are most popular in certain areas, and what consumers like and don’t like about a product. That helps us develop our niche in creating new blankets.”
Buying details
Generic blankets start at $10 wholesale, and retail for $20 and up. Licensed queen size blankets wholesale for $19 to $24, and retail for $39 to $59. Street corner vendors retail the licensed blankets for up to $80 each. “Our competitors wholesale these blankets for $24 to $27,” Singh adds. “We are dedicated to our buyers, and we offer the most competitive pricing. We are here to service the little guy who cannot go and spend $5,000 at a time. They can come to us for the most popular licensed items from several different vendors and our minimums are low.” Vendors are invited to visit Silicon Valley Textiles’ new showroom/warehouse in San Jose, CA and buy goods in person as well as place orders by phone, email and fax. “We are here to service all types of retailers,” Singh stresses, “whether they want a few pieces at a time, or need pallets of one design at a time.”
