Conklin Fashions, based in Bainbridge, NY, has sold jewelry and accessories for 26 years, currently carrying more than 10,000 different products such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pins, novelty items, body jewelry, sunglasses, and reading accessories. Offering both generic and name brand department store jewelry at heavily discounted wholesale prices, Conklin sells by the dozen, usually with free shipping and a free display, out of a 150,000 square foot warehouse with 12 loading docks.
“For the holidays, we have a really nice line of boxed jewelry,” says Jerry Conklin, owner. In the department stores, these broach pins, necklaces, and earrings will sell for five dollars, and we have them for 66 cents, in holiday red box with a see-through top. Normally when you buy jewelry, it’s on a hanging card. This is more of an item that you would buy as a gift for somebody, and it comes in a nice Christmas-y box that they can give as it is. It’s a perfect stocking stuffer.” He adds that the company also has a lot of items for kids, such as Christmas activity books and Golden Books by Random House.
Another item great for the holidays are feathered products. “The last real trend we had in jewelry was the Silly Bandz bracelets, and they were extremely hot, but now they have completely died out,” Conklin notes. “Since then there has been a strong trend towards feathered jewelry. Feathered hair extensions, earrings, and necklaces have been very popular, and that is the one trend that is going to go through Christmas, and we have hundreds of styles of feathered items.”
Great for Flea Markets
Conklin says that flea markets are a great avenue for his products, because the wholesale price is so low and vendors can sell merchandise for a fraction of the retail price. He notes that he has items marked to sell in department stores for $20 that Conklin Fashions sells for as low as 62 cents, making it possible to sell items for a dollar or two that often sell in retail stores for ten dollars or more. “Because our wholesale price is so low, they can double, triple, times by 10 and still be in the range of the retail product,” he adds. “Our building is six stories high, and it is completely packed with great quality merchandise that any flea market or swap meet could take advantage of. People depend on us for a living, and we don’t let them down.”
