World Liquidators Inc., now celebrating 20 years in business, is a major wholesaler of department store returns, closeouts and liquidations, to businesses all over the world. The company maintains an expansive selection of soft goods, such as apparel, because they are the most forgiving categories in the salvage/returns industry. Clothing, for example, may have been returned because it was the wrong size or color, rather than damaged. As a result, many good quality items can be found in each load, enabling flea market vendors, thrift store owners and auction houses to buy low and turn a hefty profit. “We are seeing many MOS, or marked out of stock, shelf pulls, and vendors can find both returns and new products in any one load,” says Robert Winkoff, executive vice president of the company.
In addition to clothing, World Liquidators’ vast inventory includes shoes, domestics and bedding, general merchandise, kitchenware, housewares, furniture, sporting goods and seasonal products. Items are sold by the piece, pallet, lot or load. “No order is too small,” Winkoff stresses. Clothing starts at $1 apiece, shoes start at $3 a pair and denim starts at $2 apiece. Pallets of clothing are sold at the piece price. “Each pallet’s contents are counted by hand, and the quantity is noted on the pallet. If someone needs around 2,500 pieces of clothing, we will look at pallets and add the numbers to get them close to that.”
Value pricing, vast profits
As for markup, or profit potential, the sky is the limit, Winkoff adds. Vendors will find, in the same pallet, items with $5 and $150 retail tags. To make merchandise attractive to their consumers, vendors can price their items under the tagged amounts and still make a good profit. “We do everything on the up and up,” Winkoff explains. “I have had loads come in that are sold to me as returns, but they have tags and look brand new. I will still sell the load as returns because it was sold to me that way.”
World Liquidators has a 35,000 square foot warehouse in Pompano Beach, FL, and vendors are welcome to stop in and look around. “Most of the pallets are in open boxes, and they can go through the pallets to see what is inside,” Winkoff shares. “If people cannot come down to see us, we will email them product pictures and details.”
To further accommodate vendors’ individual needs, World Liquidators offers multiple shipping options. In addition to shipping merchandise from its warehouse, the company allows vendors to arrange their own shipping or bring a truck to the building. “We have ten loading bays and multiple forklifts,” Winkoff continues. “My guys will wheel the pallets outside, help vendors break them down and hand stack products into their vehicles.” World Liquidators also has a large, multi-lingual sales force that includes associates who speak English, Spanish and various other languages.
